What is Colourism?

A prejudicial or discriminatory practice towards individuals with particular skin tone or shade that is perceived as undesirable within a specific ethnic/racial group or society. Typically, individuals of a darker hue may fall victim to this practice.

Factors that Influences Colourism

This practice is a product of racism and classes in coloured societies, as it upholds the eurocentric standards of beauty and the connotative meaning that is attached to individuals of a darker hue which is the association of darker hues belonging to or representing the lower class in society and is susceptible in being marginalized in institutions of oppression (media, medical world, etc.).

it is important to be aware that Colorism is referred to as only being an issue in the black community and while it manifests there, it is more wide-spread and exists within all communities of color. Colorism is not something that white people experience
